WHAT DOES A BIRTH DOULA DO?
birth doula offers you the best of both worlds. She will be able to offer
you time and continuity and will listen and offer relevant information so
you can make your own choices based on your own individual needs.
Initially, she will spend time getting to know you and your birth partner,
discuss coping techniques, positions, relaxation and breathing and help you
draw up your birth plan. During labour she will create an environment and
atmosphere that enables you to retain control, keep to your birth plan and
use all your coping techniques. Usually this is enough and the baby will
gently slide into the midwife’s gloved hand with minimal trauma to yourself
and the baby. Occasionally things don’t go to plan, it happens, but be
assured, the NHS is second to none when dealing with problems and the doula
will stay with you until after the baby is born and she is satisfied you
have no more need for her services.
